The Chart:

The Telehit Top Ten is neither an airplay nor a sales chart. It's compiled in-house by Telehit, who describes it as 'the ten best videos'.

The latest IFPI figures for Mexico indicate for 1994:

So this chart should be viewed as just a guide to Mexico's music scene (newsgroup) and not necessarily as an accurate market indicator.

The chart is broadcast on Saturday evenings on Televisa's European mix-channel GALAVISIÓN, which relays its pop music channel TELEHIT throughout most of weekends.

The chart consists of Spanish-language pop hits only ("Latin Pop") and is dominated (naturally) by Mexican artists. I have chart information from 12.02.1994 and full top tens from 3.03.1994 onwards.

The Year:

#1 artist (just ahead of Mana) and #1 single is by Luis Miguel (newsgroup) with two #1 hits (Suave and El Dia que me Quieras and La Media Vuelta still climbing). At the 1994 'Premio lo Nuestro a la Musica Latina' (the Latin Grammys) Miguel not only won the Best Album (ARIES) and Best Male Artist categories, but was also nominated for Best Music Video (Aries--won by Rosario with Sabor, Sabor) as well as twice for Best Song (Hasta que me Olvides and Ayer, both from the album ARIES), only to be beaten by Cristian's Nunca voy a Olvidarte. Miguel's new album SEGUNDO ROMANCE spent several weeks in the Billboard POP charts (3 in the top 50), peaking at its entry position at #29--the highest peak for any latin album for decades. The album already produced another number one for Miguel: El Dia que me Quieras spent 2 weeks at the top spot in October. Worlwide sales of SEGUNDO ROMANCE now stand at more 4 million. Argentinian-born Miguel is the biggest star in the Latin music scene of today: at an age of only 24, Miguel has already sold 17 million records and sold out the 10,000 seat Mexico City National Auditorium 16 times this year alone.
The only artist (excluding of course Jon Secada and Big Mountain) that saw any exposure in Britain was actually Miguel Bosé (#19 artist), who had two singles and an album (all in English) released in the UK. Both singles were tipped (by Hit Music) to chart, but eventually neither surfaced in the CIN Top 100. Luis Miguel by the way had his picture on the cover of the December issue of MBI that featured an Latin America special.
#2 group Mana had two hits, both went to #1: Oye mi Amor for 4 and Te Lloré un Rio for 3 weeks, ending as #6 and #7 hits of 1994 respectively.
#3 singer Mijares' 4-week #1 Corazón Salvaje (from the album CORAZÓN SALVAJE) is the title theme from the top Mexican soap, while his other two songs Vive en Mi and Amor are from his new album VIVE EN MI.
Artists from outside Latin America were represented relatively well during 1994: No sight of Gloria Estefan; but Spain's Miguel Bosé and Héroes del Silencio, Italy's Zucchero and Eros Ramazotti, as well as US's Big Mountain and Jon Secada scored heavily.
